Choosing an opener

Which Merlin opener suits your door?

Choosing the right opener starts with the door you have, because Merlin sorts its openers by door type. Merlin makes roller door openers, and openers for sectional or tilt doors.

Sectional doors: Commander range

For sectional doors, Merlin's Commander range runs from Essential up to Ultimate. The Commander Essential is designed for standard residential sectional garage doors. It suits a single sectional door up to 2.4 metres high and 90 kilograms. There are larger models in the range that suit bigger and heavier doors. The Commander Extreme II handles doors up to 3.5 metres high and 286 kilograms and is compatible with Merlin's wireless Safety PE Beams for remote access and usage.

The Commander Ultimate is side wall mounted instead of ceiling mounted. This motor is direct drive, taking away the need for a chain and motor pole, this frees up headroom in low garages. The Commander Ultimate suits doors up to 4.2 metres high and 230 kilograms.

Roller doors: SilentDrive and WeatherDrive

For domestic roller doors, Merlin offers the SilentDrive Essential, the SilentDrive Elite and the WeatherDrive. The SilentDrive range is built for quiet operation. That matters if your garage sits under a living area or near a bedroom. The SilentDrive Elite handles roller garage doors up to 4.5 metres high and 120 kilograms. The WeatherDrive handles doors up to 5.5 metres high and 100 kilograms.

Model Door type Max height Max weight
Commander Essential Sectional 2.4 m 90 kg
Commander Extreme II Sectional 3.5 m 286 kg
Commander Ultimate Sectional 4.2 m 230 kg
SilentDrive Elite Roller 4.5 m 120 kg
WeatherDrive Roller 5.5 m 100 kg

Merlin's warranties run from three to seven years, depending on the model. Merlin generally recommends an annual service, and its servicing requirements for warranty vary by opener, so check your manual.

Security and smart control

How do Merlin's security and smart features work?

Security+ 2.0

Merlin's Security+ 2.0 technology sends a new code every time you press the remote. It picks one code from 100 billion encrypted rolling codes. This rolling-code technology improves security by generating a new encrypted code every time the remote is used. The code changes with every press, so an old signal cannot be reused.

You can program up to 180 remotes to one Merlin opener.

myQ smart control

Smart control comes from Merlin's myQ app. Most Merlin models connect to myQ via an internet gateway, and the Commander Ultimate has Wi-Fi built in. Once set up, you can open and close the door from your phone and get alerts. You can also share access with up to five trusted users. That adds everyday convenience for families and trades.

B&D openers

What does B&D offer?

B&D is one of Australia’s best-known garage door brands, offering opener systems designed to work seamlessly with its roller and sectional door ranges. B&D says it launched Australia’s first automatic roller door opener, the Controll-A-Door, in 1975. Whether Merlin or B&D suits you depends on your door type and your existing setup.

Controll-A-Door Power Drive

For residential roller doors, including Roll-A-Door and Roll-A-Door Neo. It has a 600 newton motor, soft start and stop and LED courtesy lights.

Smart Pro

For heavy sectional doors in the Designer Series. It has a 1400 newton motor, smartphone control, a rechargeable battery backup and B&D's AUTO LOCK. It has automatic reverse and backdrive prevention, which stops the door being forced open.

Secure Opener

For standard Panelift sectional doors, single or double.

B&D’s opener warranty is seven years or a set number of lift cycles, 20,000 to 30,000 depending on the model. It extends to 10 years when you buy the opener with a B&D door. Because garage doors and openers involve tensioned components and safety systems, professional installation helps ensure reliable operation and compliance with current safety requirements. If you own a B&D door, our remote range includes B&D remotes.

Battery backup and safety

Why do battery backup and safety upgrades matter?

Battery backup

Most openers do not use a battery unless a backup system is installed. Battery backup keeps your door working in a power outage. On Merlin openers it is usually a 12 volt rechargeable battery made for that model. The Commander Ultimate has it built in. The Commander Extreme II is battery backup compatible. B&D’s Smart Pro also offers a rechargeable battery backup.

Safety

Safety is just as important. Merlin designs its openers to meet AS/NZS 60335.2.95, the Australian and New Zealand standard for garage door openers. Modern opener systems include auto-reverse technology, which helps prevent damage or injury by stopping and reversing if an obstruction is detected. Since the end of November 2020, smart-enabled openers also need monitored infrared safety beams. We check the safety reverse and safety beams before we leave.

Existing doors

Can you add an opener to your existing door?

Often, yes. Merlin says compatible openers can often be retrofitted, without a new door. The result depends on your door type, size and weight, and on whether the springs are balanced correctly.

Roller doors roll up around a drum, and roller door openers attach to that drum at the side of the door, so you need some side room there. Sectional doors open along the ceiling, so their openers sit there and you need headroom. If the motor on an older door has failed, our service and repairs team can handle the repair, replacement or upgrade.
